About the "horse bones" thing, you can check in any EDICT-based dictionary (e.g. jisho.org) that it's a common slang (although it's too classic for it to be perceived as such) to refer (usually despectively) to a person of doubtful or unknown origins.

In this case, it would be the trope of the father confrontationally saying "who's this chump from who-knows-where and how does he dare to try dating my daughter?" or something to that end.
