I am a little surprised they showed the face of the friend at the end, I feel like I am missing something because I feel like they would have only done that if we knew who the character is but I don't think we do?

Personally I thought it was to symbolize that so far Shao's memories were of an idolized version of his friend but at the end he recalled him for what he truly was.
Reading the comments made me realize I'm pushing the writing of an action shounen too much; time will tell whether he's still alive, the earring is too detailed to be a red herring.

Dude's activation is a damn code, he's secret AI project from the government! He's from the Rose garden, so does Rose has more like him?
Also the kids in that class having their magic go rampant and the black star in the eyes instead for white, something is fishy there too!
looks like a girl
This is manga though... we might never really know.

I'm curious, so he'll become an evil mage by resorting to forbidden magic. but how does that relate to destroying the country?
If he was mass killing people to find the right sacrifice, letting him skip a few steps and get straight to killing would speed up the process.

Huh, the elaborate design on the dead friend (especially that single earring) makes me think he will be relevant again in the future.
