Personally I thought it was to symbolize that so far Shao's memories were of an idolized version of his friend but at the end he recalled him for what he truly was.
Reading the comments made me realize I'm pushing the writing of an action shounen too much; time will tell whether he's still alive, the earring is too detailed to be a red herring.

It was a fun read and also gives a good character depth to Shao. And I really like the story of Shao grieving over a friends death and how we see what he thinks of it, hell even how Solo views it as well.
