For me at least, there's a distinction between "BL" as a genre and just having a romance that happens to be gay.
Might just be due to so many years of scorn for how BL stories have been written, but most of the ones I can think of that have been explicitly part of the "BL" genre has basically been little more than an excuse for smut. To the point where I think a large number of people (myself included) have a difficult time separating the genre from smut.
If I'm looking for porn, I'll go fucking look for porn, so those kinds of stories have never sat well with me. (And before any Tumblr expats get mad at me, yes, excessive fanservice in general pisses me off. It's why I could never take Fairy Tail seriously.) Anything in the BL genre gets set aside almost immediately for me with minimal consideration because I've just come to expect certain tropes and stereotypes from the genre.
This, to me, isn't "BL" because it's not a story focused on "heh, let's draw two hot guys fucking or almost-fucking as much as we can." It's just a romance story... where the main character happens to be queer.
I'm pretty excited for this arc. I think the author has done a fairly good job dealing with some heavy and complicated topics, and I have confidence that they will carry that energy into this arc and make it as good as the last 2. I've loved how supportive Asahi has been to his friends, so I hope he gets a good ending, too.
