i think how it works is that their insides , aka where all the muscles are. stays the same no matter what. like putting some gas into different shape container. even if they turn their shape into a cheetah, they don't have the muscles to move like one.

as for moving their hands like long claws, D already tried doing that my extending his arms, but he has less control and force behind what is already a pretty weak attack, something about being less dense or something, which would backs up my theory for the first point

I get your first point and about your second, what I mean claw is just normal claw. Hand with finger and sharp nails. I know that D can't control it well when he extend his limbs too much. What I mean by parasyte is like the final boss (forgot his name) who can turn all his limbs into weapon at once.

Pretty sure in one of past chapter, D said he is only the best in mimicking human form. I don't think he can do those kind of transformation as good as human transformation.

I think in the first few chapters the footsoldiers have their own specialties ins hapeshifting. D is good at mimicking humans, other footsoldiers are good at mimicking animals or maybe even furniture.
