Depends how unstable the person is, but if someone is using self harm as a threat, usually that threat is empty and simply for manipulation. Still even if the threat is real, that's not a reason to stay with that person. If someone threatens self harm to get you to do something, you need to be formulating some way to get away from them like you should anytime a romantic partner tries to manipulate or coerce you
