They're not. They're just close friends... or well, Yena is in the friendzone. Yena simply doesn't hang out with anyone else than Hitomi, so we'd often see the two together. Any other usual interactions from Yena is with the lions and it involves fighting.

@jonsmth Well, if we assume that she is truly a transgender, then this is an extremely transphobic manga, since Yena’s identity is constantly parodied as a character’s quirk. Personally, I see it more like a tsundere with a gender accent. On the other hand, if it’s really the second, then this complicates the understanding of their ship even more.

Do you deny that the author ship them? I can swear that if these two were the only main leads, then almost all manga resources put the yuri tag on it. At least if Yena was a “legal” guy, then that would be indistinguishable from generic romcom arc. I agree that Yena just has no other interaction, but what about Hitomi? She obviously has an attraction for men, but I don’t remember the author showing her interest in MC.

there wasnt a duck because there is this rule in this manga : the students of this school are mammals only . no birds , no ducks , no chickens , no reptiles , no fishes , no insects .

the bats , whales and dolphins , .... , are counted as mammals .

in page 1 of chapter 1 , there are penguins and crocodiles , but then later the mangaka made this rule for this manga , so they never appear again .

i guess the reason is : only mammal girls have b00bs , lol .

the teachers are exception , they are reptiles , dinosaurs . but the mangaka have never drawn a female dinosaur teacher with big b00bs .

I wouldn't say the manga is transphobic. Yena is an anthropomorphic caricature of a typical hermaphroditic hyena and there is relatable to it in real life that it would be "parodying" it. Yena's quirk specifically is that they were born with a phallic genitalia, which is normal with hyenas and rare among humans. Yena's character has since been developed to not care about their actual sex (once wore girl's clothes but went back), and not also came to accept that the (lack of) penis doesn't matter. I'd say it's a journey for true self-identity, one that is disconnected from their assigned sex, and despite the challenges of body dysphoria.

I don't think the author is shipping Yena and Hitomi. I didn't even get that sort of impression from anything in the manga.

I recall Hitomi having a crush on Jin. However, she won't date him because she thinks Jin already has Lanka in his heart.
Hitomi is nice to everyone. Remember the sleepover with the extinct species girls? I don't think she treats Yena too differently from her girl friends.

1.Hyenas are not hermaphrodites, hermaphrodite doesn't mean what you think it means - snails are hermaphrodites hyenas are either male or female
2.Yena behaves has a typical hyena hime-sama but because hyenas have swapped gender roles she, outside of her species, fits in more easily with males rather than females but among her own species she would be seen as an idyllic female

@reu I just had too bad experience with gender uncomfortability. Therefore, I am annoyed by the thought that someone is not a representative of their gender, if it doesn't correspond to stereotypes about it. For example, when people try to argue that otokonoko characters are trans only because they are guys who like the feminine lifestyle.

1. The hyena is described to be a hermaphrodite. To be exact, it's Pseudohermaphroditism. Essentially, it's having the reproductive organs of one sex, but having it look like that of the other. There are 2 other types of hermaphroditism and your snail example being one of them (Simultaneous Hermaphrodite).
2. That's just part of the anthropomorphism. Hyenas don't act anything like any human archetypes.

Never said anything about traps. No, not a parody of trap characters but a parody of a hyena, a hermaphrodite; rather than a trap, Yena is closer to being a futa. The trans aspect was a result of character development and is not meant to parody trans people. Unlike most real trans people, Yena has reason to believe that they were a boy the entire time - their phallic genitalia. Yena was then proven that they were in fact female, and that penis doesn't define one's identity - even then, Yena still identifies themselves as a boy.
