Nakano, the traveling ronin, is on a quest for revenge. His town had been destroyed and all of his kin were slain by a nameless demon fox. Following the trail of rumors, he runs into Senko, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the one responsible for his woes. He prepares to strike her down but stills his hand at the last second when he sees that she makes no move to defend herself.
With his anger temporarily subdued, he realizes that the woman before him is not quite the same as the one who ruined his life. After explaining his situation to her, she confesses that the woman who had destroyed his town must have been one of Tamamo no Mae's tails. Some time ago, a foolish man, who was trying to free her from her prison and use her power for his own agenda has shattered the stone that was binding Tamamo into nine pieces and inadvertently split her soul as well, with each of her tails gaining sentience and escaping. Senko is a tail as well, but she is the weakest, because she was the last tail to escape and contains all of Tamamo's love, hope and kindness. She is also on a quest: to find the other tails, so they all can be sealed back into stone, ending the calamity that has befallen the land.
Because of their shared link, Senko can feel the presence of other tails and as such is Nakano's best bet to find the tail responsible for what happened to him and so he begrudgingly agrees to escort and protect Senko on her journey in exchange for getting the chance to enact his revenge. And so they travel feudal japan together to stop the vicious spreading of curses and calamities unleashed by the other tails.
