I knew her painting wasn't gonna be the one to start a cultural revolution, but at least pay the struggling artist!
Also something obviously happened to trigger his potential, but whatever it was has been replaced by her comments.

It wasn't harsh, it was the kind of constructive criticism that an artist needs.

If you paint to sustain yourself it's often easy to slip into the "easy" money type of pieces, that people buy because "they look pretty". If it's not authentic, as in if it's not what you actually want to paint, it's an empty and shallow kind of art.

Since Elena knows exactly how expressive his paintings should be, it's natural for her to be disappointed, because she came believing that he had already discovered how he wanted to paint, instead he's painting how others want him to.

His success in the first time line probably came after he gave up trying to please other people, since he wasn't successful at it anyway, so he must've just started painting what he wanted. In a - if he were to be a failure, he may as well be a failure but do it his way- kind of mind-set.
Elena's words will still push him into this way of thinking, just without the "desperation" of repeatedly failing to please others.

sis really just made him paint for 2hrs, didn't pay a cent, and insulted his art. she didn't tell him what she wanted and she's upset that he didn't read her mind.

there's comments praising her for her manipulation skills, but if she really wanted to inspire him and hasten his growth, how about just telling him right off the bat to draw whatever he wants and then praise him and use positive reinforcement?

regardless of the positive results of her insulting him, her intentions didn't come from a good place.

she was his first customer - he's probably struggling with money. i think it's valid for him to use whatever means to try to earn a living rather than to stick to an egoistic style of painting that caterred only to himself.

plus, she's disappointed because she knows he has another painting style - but how could he know that she wanted that specific, unheard of painting style? she's being rather unreasonable.

and criticism can be constructive, but when it's unsolicited it usually comes from the desire to feel better rather than from a desire to help. she only told him what was wrong AFTER he chased her. she would have been content to leave him after only insulting him and not giving him direction to improve. she's thinking purely from her own perspective her and is just getting butthurt that she didn't get what she wanted.
(although i can understand why she acts this way. she's been hurt very badly and quite reasonably believes that she can't believe in the goodwill of others. still a dick move on her part though)

True tho, she's too rude and too emotional to judge the artist, the "genius" can't be created by day... if he's going to make revolutionary paintings in the future then there must be something that changed his style on the way of it, isn't that obvious? how Elena facing this isn't smart at all. Cmon girl....

Girl, at least pay for the canvas... Tho I understand she wants for him to show his own talent, that's not the way to go about it... Or so I think 😞

Her criticism would have been more scathing and sarcastic if she paid him a lot of money for his crappy portrait.

She just did a dine and dash. On top of being very arrogant. That's horrible.

He must be struggling so that's why he is choosing to draw in that style because he still needs to earn. She should have paid him. Drawing a portrait is very hard work.

She told him the style was awkward, which is basically the best way to describe work that doesn't feel authentic.
It wouldn't be authentic even if she told him what she wanted either. Because he still would just be catering to her expectations, and that would make the "advice" pointless.

Call me an extremist, but authentic art is something to feel proud of. Besides, most artists that became legendary, became so because they weren't willing to cater to people and stuck to their vision. Their economic success depended only on how well they managed to sell that vision (some did pretty badly, but are still admired none the less).

The story set him up to be a legendary artist, he can't be legendary by catering to others and ignoring his own vision.
Besides, we know that he didn't become successful until he actually changed his style, so he's not even efficiently sustaining himself.

Edit:
The only thing I can agree with everyone is that not paying was a major dick move.
Regarding everything else, I think Elena kicked him in the right direction. It wasn't nice, but nice doesn't always work.

Besides, all of you reacting emotionally and commenting how unfair she was is a prime example on how single minded people get when they are unhappy and disappointed about something.

She was disappointed, she reacted badly, but it was probably more helpful than all those people paying for a bs painting.
