I thought that geta were outdoor shoes.

In all the earlier chapters we have only seen the kids wearing socks indoors, so no slippers except very few characters. So those geta basically just appeared for that joke. Yes, they're traditionally outdoor shoes but there are also indoor versions nowadays.
