I dunno how many cultures put an emphasis on it like the Chinese or Japanese, but not having at least one boy to "carry on the family name" is... a big thing.

In fact, when there was a limitation on how many children could be had (or even if they couldn't take care of more than a couple kids), there was a thing decades ago where baby girls would be left abandoned in public transport lockers to just... die.

Every culture has an ugly side in one way or another. It's sad but true.

It's definitevely not a chinese specificity. In most of the het marriages, the couple keep the family name of the man so it's understandable that's the grandfather wanted his family name to continue. Is it a reason to take the anger on her ? No but i can assure you it's definitevely not exclusive to China.

Reminder that the now-defunct "one child" policy has resulted in a pretty noticeable sex imbalance in mainland Chinese demographics. And it was actually even *more* skewed back in 1953 apparently, ie. back when the Communists were only getting started trying to shed assorted ancien régime dead wood (like footbinding, which they actually did manage to stamp out). The country also RATHER stands out on another map...

India also manages a pretty ugly imbalance even without the Confucian bullshit but the PRC is a notable standout, all the more so as it's the single most populous state on the planet.
