If she leaves her house and doesn't come back they won't give a fuck, which makes it easy for the relationship to have a happy ending.

Welcome to Classic Asian Parenting™ where the family does not exist to nurture the child so much as the child exists to serve the interests of the family, however terribly out of touch with the times their conception of such now might be. You know all those memes about absurdly demanding Asian parents?

I've talked to enough people who went through that wringer to assure you they're very much Based On A True Story. (None of those people had anything good to say about that parenting model, btw.)

Gotta say that whenever this series isn't being cute and gay as heck it's hella critical about any number of well-attested systemic problems in Chinese society.

@Ore I don't think you understand what i was trying to say. Grandad wanted a boy because if he get married latter, he will keep his family name and continue the family name legacy with his owns kids. Women generally take the family names of the husbands in HET marriages (and i precised Het because i don't know how it work in same sex marriage for the familiy name) so if all kids of a family are girls then they are most likely not being able to carry the family name if they marry a man. Althought i don't need to precise het marriage for the manga since it's China.

@Lilliwyt reminder that eg. the Japanese get around that by "adopting" the daughter's husband into her family when necessary. IIRC that practice isn't unknown in China and Korea either but rarer there (and both are waaaaaay behind Japan in social progress in general anyway, outright dictatorships aren't too great for that sort of thing).

Doesn't change the fact that this is an issue in the first place due to a lingering cultural obsession with patrilineal continuity decidedly a few notches (or a dozen) above even the premodern average.

I can say that this is true at least as a fellow Asian.

Nothing is more hurts than hearing your parents saying exactly what this chapter tells you.
A failure, where your parents pretty much expect you to become godlike person 24/7 and comparing it with other child as well.

LOL too real, people complain with my parents about trying to have the third boy to inherit all the asset. LMAO. Truth to be told, I see more families cripple because they spoil the son too damn much. But the desperation of these close-minded folks ever amuse me.

@XenoAshura - the presumably do have something along those lines, as organised modern societies now are wont to, but A) this is a deeply corrupt, mismanaged totalitarian police state we're talking about B) such authorities are more likely than not drinking much the same Kool-Aid C) there's a pretty nasty lowkey Social Darwinist, elitist-classist undercurrent encoded in the whole Confucian sociocultural value system, in modern times only exacerbated by the PRC's turn to barely-veiled predatory capitalism since the Eighties. (Similar issues are mutatis mutandis also noticeable in Korea and Japan, presumably Taiwan too, and in usually less structured forms common enough wherever status and income disparities are great and not persistently and systematically worked against.)

The principal's brazenly naked rigging of the Tai Chi competition - presumably aimed to curry favor with the families of the "elite" students and make his school look better in reports to superiors - rather illustrates the point. If you're "undesirable" people of one sort or another the authorities are not on your side and could care less about what the fig happens to you; indeed they'll quite happily trample you into the mud for their own gain and to promote the "right sorts."
The parallels to the abusive neglect Qi Lin gets from her parents are not coincidental in the least.

Ugh, this just got me miffed... wanting a boy to keep the family line going is stupid enough but to neglect a child because of that is even more.

This does put into perspective why Qi Lin acts so much like an excited puppy around Cang Shu

This hit me harder than I thought of. I mean, it's kinda diff for me but I understand how Qi Lin feels. I'm SO glad she has someone beside her now, and it's our chad gal.
