@chanana I appreciate you looking into this and taking the time to write down what you feel! I always like discussions and this manga is rich for them!

For your first part, I already told the person I see where they're coming from and that yes, he was indeed being homophobic in this chapter. Ono is a complicated character and like you says, he puts himself at the center stage like bragging about his sexual encounters. This is because he relishes in the happiness of others and that makes him a social person to get that fuel, as Jun says in Ch.6. Meanwhile, Jun is the opposite and likes to stay in the back without associating with people. Ono and Jun never were friends due to this lacking chemistry, noted by Jun in Ch.2. However, I feel its important to draw a line from what he actually believes in and him using his sexuality as a weapon. I'M NOT SAYING ITS RIGHT, PLEASE NOTE. I'm just saying that since Jun used it as a weapon first, he turned it around and fought harder. He shouldn't have done that as there was other ways he could've handled the situation. But he did this because kids always find the easiest and quickest way to hurt somebody, and HARD. So while he was acting homophobic here, its not known what he truly thinks deep down yet. Ono did want Jun to explain himself, from his sexuality and cheating, in Ch.6 after all. But...as always, Jun attacked him verbally. Hence the end card I wrote and mentioning Mr. Fahrenheit's words. (P.S. They don't know Jun cheated on him with a man. Miura says that in this chapter.)

For the second part, I kinda got that after reaching the first conclusion, but there is a bit more to it I found as well. Translating this series I knew that something was up for Jun. He was always so cold and then when he met with those that KNEW him, he was happy and joyous despite it not being healthy. Being homophobic himself can describe a lot of these situations I now see. I also noticed a fun fact—Jun never uses homo in front of those he knows are gay. Instead, he uses it around people that don't. ESPECIALLY to address himself since it's even present in his internal dialogue. I didn't think this was significant so chapter 1 is actually wrongly translated. He and Miura never used the word gay, nor did her friend's boyfriend. It was all "Homo". It seems he tries to respect his fellow homosexual probably because he knows they can get hurt, but doesn't feel comfortable in his own skin to give the same treatment to himself on a everyday basis. He wants his sexuality to be erased, after all. He finds himself disgusting, and without anyone to teach him otherwise as you mention, he treats himself with little respect.

As for the last, I have to say you're wrong to a certain extent. Sure, he might be somewhat scared about coming out of the closet, but that's not his main motive. More to come on this in future chapters but you could already see a bit in Ch. 1 when he escapes Ryouhei's...detailed recount of Ono's sexual experience, and at the end of the chapter when he wonders how Miura would "feel" if she knew he was a homosexual. As in, would she be troubled? Would she be accepting? Is this a burden onto her? I thought the language implied that and I tried to do the same when translating. The whole "Zero friction" plays a big role in this, too. It's why he now actively plays the "antagonist" first introduced to him in Ch.2.

Once again, thanks for this! A lot of what you wrote is actually what I was trying to say/believe in, though 😁

All characters in this are flawed and Onoie is still a self-righteous homophobe. I still think that way without ever lumping them into villain and hero or black and white.

Somehow I didn’t expect this despite it being the cover for the series...
Also, no one tried to get him out of the window? Seriously? I mean, they probably wouldn’t have been able to get him but still, to just stare and look?
Kinda weird...

With that being said, I’m very exited for the next chapter! Thanks for translation! ❤️

@APinkFox Don't forget that they're all completely shell-shocked by the situation unfolding like that. These are kids… they have absolutely no expectation of someone just deciding to suicide in front of them.

To be fair, I'm an adult and I likely wouldn't fare any better in a situation like that.

I wanted to think that Ono was a good guy, just mislead and angry.

But I hope he falls off a cliff, breaks both of his legs, and suffers from the pain and fear until he finally starves to death. Fuck off with that look as Jun was jumping out of the window. Now you're remorseful? Of course you are, since everyone will blame you for his death if Jun dies. You don't regret hurting Jun, you only regret the actions you did to lead him to this point, and are afraid of the consequences that will come after.

I hope everyone you love leaves you. I hope that you are forgotten forever. I hope that you die, hopeless and alone. Stupid cunt ass, cock sucking, fuck face. Rot in hell.

Edit:

As for Jun, I doubt that he's dead. Probably a few injuries, now on suicide watch. Fuck Ono.

Edit2:

You think Ono is laying it on thick with the homophobia, because he himself is also gay? And he is so insecure about it that he rejects it harshly to remove any doubt from his friends' minds?

Maybe I'm thinking to hard about it.

Why is there a thing on the last page claiming that Ono isn't homophobic when he's using homophobic language and bullying someone because they are a homosexual? He is purposefully causing harm to somebody else and yet he's only hurt, because of his fee fees got hurt that one time when Jun accused him of being homosexual, because of his unnatural obsession with Miura's love life?

Please make it make sense.

@PrettyStupidThang I might have to update this chapter to fix that section and clarify...what I meant was Ono isn't necessarily homophobic himself. I realized its wrong to rid of that label entirely though. Instead, his actions were homophobic.

We dont know what Ono believes yet or not because we see through Jun's eyes. And to be honest, it just seems to be as a man lashing out in a hateful and dispicable way to a certain person he sees hurt his friend. It's not necessarily because he hates those people. If he did there are several questionable things he let fly around him (mostly his dick getting groped.)

I just felt that distinction was important but I failed to get it across right it seems...😔

Man, I can't believe nobody tried to stop him from jumping... I MEAN, why nobody grabed his arm when he was clearly walking towards the window saying I'll get out of here!?

I think the author is gonna go with Ono being gay. He is calling Jun "it" and "thing", saying he's disgusting, because that's how Ono feels about himself. It's entirely possible he's never gotten along with Jun because Ono had a crush on him, or something like that.

I've dealt with a couple guys who were closet gay. One of them married a woman, and lied about his sexuality to literally everyone, until his wife caught him sending nude pics to his online boyfriend. Even then, he blamed her for it. I can't count the number of times, before he was caught, that he said gays were mentally ill, that gay soldiers shouldn't be supported by the government, or that gay marriage was wrong.

When you grow up in a culture that tells you being gay means you're a disgusting pervert who should die... it's hard not to hate yourself. Though that's a possible reason for Ono doing what he does, that's not an excuse. He still drove an already emotionally damaged person to attempt suicide. Hopefully facing the consequences of his actions makes Ono realize exactly how fucked up it was, and changes him for the better one way or another.

if it comes out later in the manga that Ono isn't actually that mean or whatever why would you put a TL note before that happens spoiling it
if it doesn't come out later then you're just adding an extra page that amounts to "this is my review of the story" which literally no-one cares about

Hope this ends on a positive note and Jun doesn't die. Hope this goes in a 10 years past direction and Jun is living a fulfilling life as his true self. The end of the chapter really stomped the crude out of my heart.

Hi I'm back, mostly to discuss something I see being discussed here and I feel the need to weigh in.

I really, really dislike our current culture's tendency to crucify "racists", "homophobes" and "misogynists" like people are not humans capable of change. What Ono did was indeed homophobic, and in this moment, yes, he is a homophobe. Should he be forgiven for what he did? Fuck no. It's absolutely abhorrent. He doesn't need a pass from anybody. Does this doom him to forever being labeled a "homophobe" and make him completely irredeemable? No. People are absolutely capable of learning and change.

No matter what awful and stupid things we see in the media being done by the likes of racists, homophobes and misogynists, etc, they have the ability and power to change that label themselves, and should be given that opportunity. This does NOT mean forgiveness, this does NOT mean they cannot suffer consequences or be immune to criticism. It just means that if we see improvement in the future, we shouldn't dismiss it, at the very least. That's all.

I, like others, also have the feeling that there's way more to Ono than meets the eye. I guess we'll find out what exactly is his deal. I hope everyone is open to his character development.

Wait, what the point of the PSA TL note thing? I don't understand what it was trying to refute...

that TL is just sad and straight up bs
maybe it's not Ono's or any singular person's fault for Jun's ending his life, but how could you say they're not homophobic
even queer people can have internalized (and external) queerphobia
Ono is a classic homophobe, along with the rest of them who don't speak out against it
the world is not black and white, but even on a spectrum, there are values that are clearly read as black and vice versa
