Or, someone's spreading misinformation about him on purpose to make his injuries seem worse. No one needs to bother trying to assassinate an heir that can't have heirs, he'd be set aside for the other princes to advance. Bide some time while he's recovering, then reveal it was some major BS when he's able to deal with stuff like attackers in the middle of the night again. Or, he's simply trying to annul the engagement for now because he has no idea the girl he found interesting is his fiance. Regardless, exaggeration of injuries could be useful in court politics I suppose.

So basically they wanted to change Prince from marrying MC to Chenyu, but after hearing about his injuries decided to go along with it so can get benefits from the marriage even if he can't have kids. Chenyu definitely is a schemer and a sharp head on her shoulders. Her mother on the other hand has drowned in paranoia, arrogance and self-importance. Likely because knows can't hold her position on own, has no value outside it, and has trouble sleeping worrying if other wives are going to do to her what did to them.
@Zakyrie Considering the picture I'd say his injuries while serious are exaggerated. Like Glomoro said, would allow him to stay home and recover in peace while making his enemies think he's no longer a threat as being crippled and sterile implies great weakness in a culture that values strength and appearance. Also, seemed sharp as a blade when had subordinate search for info on MC and didn't seem to be suffering any severe emotional stress or trauma despite being secluded in his carriage. Will just have to keep reading to find out what his true injuries are and why did or didn't say certain things, but considering MC is a doctor with modern day medicine she'll probably be able to get him back to almost full health after treatment and rehab.
