My bet is that the mastermind was worrying they were about to kill themselves, and it actually baited the dad into going to the arena to stop their fight, giving him his skill back so he wouldn't die.

Why would they do that? Well, unless Lavi is motivating Merchant-san, their plan probably won't work, and if Lavi ends up dead/traumatized from killing his father or sister, he might get himself killed without Merchant-san knowing and their plan goes to shit again.

Else who knows why with our current understanding of how skills work in this world overall.
