like the comments say I think making donuts or rings is a sort of escapism that the teacher uses from her depression, but when she couldn't dig the hole anymore, she didn't see any reason to live any longer. she uses alcohol as a form to suppress her desire to make donuts and rings because she thinks its improper to do continue doing so.
