What do you mean by “awakening”? Are the girls under a spell or something? It does seem like that.

This series is very meta and yes, there are many people with "powers" based on romcom tropes it's been explained in past threads but I guess I can do it once more:

Some people have "the power of the protagonist" that is a kind of super rizz combined with every opportunity possible to events going on your favor, FMC and fake MC have this power, that's why they can influence others for good or bad.

Others have "the power of the author" that it's like a bird eye sight about how things might happen according to romcom tropes, those who really know how to use it not only do it passively but can cause events and reactions in the whole story, MC, a girl that appears in vol 2 and library friend have this power (the friend only before becoming gyaru and to a lesser extent)

There are other powers like FMC who has such a good sense of hearing that she can hear intentionality, moods or whether you're honest.

Now... The original infatuation of the three girls for ryoma is because of this effect, the novels themselves call it a kind of poison, kotaro believing he's a mob is also an effect of such poison, then shiho appears and kotaro begins to heal thanks to her, Azusa is the closest to them so she also is getting out of the poison (also because her infatuation is based on trauma)

Once everyone is out of the "power of the story" they start living dull and happy lives until something brings back the tropes and so on

Partially, it’s because of Kotaro point of view in the story.

A big problem in Kotaro for the girls is how he is very passive. And it’s not like they did nothing.
Kirari tried for years to motivate him into someone with more sense of self. She doesn’t even expect him to be like Ryoma, she could have been satisfied if Kotaro can just be like the typical protagonist in romcom who was nobody (and that’s quite a low bar to reach), but grow up and enjoy his life. Yet, he choose to become a mob character, the only role he believe he can perform.

They enter high school, and it’s a timing to start new life in new environment. Added with new priorities from falling in love.
It’s not like they maliciously treat him coldly. Ryoma is self-centred prick, but he never order them to do anything, especially not to Kotaro whom the girls never mentioned. He never ordered Azusa to ignore her step brother. Kirari changes her character because she wants to match the type she thought Ryoma likes, not because he actively asks her.

Meanwhile, Kotaro doesn’t try to make himself heard. Once the girl moves on, he try to fade out, rather than trying to catch up. So, the girls just think the old relationship is over and it’s time to go separate ways.

The girls, Azusa and Kirari especially, only starts to notice him again after he interacts with Shiho because he starts to actually have a character.

The mob deleusion of Kotaro works well in this story. I don’t know how but the author took a common trope and turned it into a genuine source of humour, good on them!

First, the comments seems to see it like Kotaro is wronged and his trophy harem is stolen by other guy so he must take revenge, Ryoma must be defeated, and the girls must be made to regret their life.
But Kotaro is actually quite accepting. It happens suddenly so there’s a shock and loss, but he see it as they made their choice and they move to their separate stories. He is also well aware of his own shortcoming in emotional development.

Second, Ryoma is a self-centred prick, but he’s not the malicious netori hero protagonist type who consciously seduce girls and collect them like trophies. He’s the typical dense protagonist who thought all those girls are just friendly without any romantic motives. Even if it means he unknowingly toy with their feeling.
And even if he do realize their feeling, he believe his love story is with Shiho. Ironically the only one who actually hates him. He could have scored a romcom ending with other girls without problem and he had to choose the impossible.

Yeah, and ryoma doesn't even know that either kirari, yuzuki or azusa even know kotaro until he tells him between volumes 3 and 4 (that is another blown to his self esteem to know he had been with kotaro's "hand me downs" all this time while he also got shiho)

I'd say it's more of the girls finally starting to realize the "Protag" doesn't view any of them as even potential romantic interests and is obsessed with the main girl to the point of isolating her in his delusions of being her "destined?/ideal?" boyfriend.

BTW... For those who still think this is a revenge story and want to read that kind of thing , the same author has started another webnovel that is actually NTR themed, you can find it on syosetu but beware... The chapter so far aren't about instant retribution and Mc is very passive too, to annoying degrees, just like in the first chapters of this one, but unlike this series, the new one is real ntr and the cheaters so far seem irredeemable

I read up to this point without commenting seriously to see whether Koutarou is going to stand up against him when it comes to Shiho...And I still have yet to see it.
While Ryou has that disgusting Main character and narcissist personality, Kou has the inferiority and mob mentality. Kou is still struggling to match Ryou's tempo when speaking but he's trying his best to do it.
