Pretty much you predicted everything right.
Red's all-rounder skills allowed him to do almost everything and since the hero party no longer can function, everyone besides the Hero is arguing among each other. The Sage refuses to acknowledge his mistakes.
This ultimately leads to

the collapse of the hero party and finding Red which leads to

them realizing the importance of the Divine Protections which leads to

the Hero abandoning her duties and going to her true destiny

Oh and the author was thinking of giving the Sage a redemption path but decided to have him hate Red even further.
The Sage does not get a happy ending

I feel like Lit's already sent out wedding invitations, and Red still hasn't grasped the fact she's into him.

So, went back and re-read everything, since it's been ages and this is one of a bunch of "kicked from the (hero) party" over a short time, and Ares is even more of a scumbag than I remembered.

Considering the level of support and strategy contributions he was responsible for, I am surprised that the hero party has been so successful since he left His instincts have been instrumental to the success of every encounter we've been privy to.

Also, Ares reminds me of that pervert villain from SAO that Kirito cut in half. So the fact that he seems to be trying to make moves on Rutti makes me feel really gross, and I feel like that's the real reason he wanted the big brother out of the picture.

The collapse was mostly the sages fault, he booted Red because he was jealous that Red was the smartest and most competent member, and lied to the rest about why Red left. Red was their tactician, the diplomat, the cook, the quartermaster etc. Basically everything outside if combat Red handled.He basically thinks that since he is a sage he should be the smartest and succeed at everything with no effort, but Red keeps showing him up in ability because Red puts in effort to learn useful things and skills. I can not remember if it came up yet, but there is a compatibility with and dark side to the divine protections. The sage has horrible compatibility with his outside of its combat aspects.

The sage then took control of all of Red's tasks, and failed miserably at all of them , he annoyed and turned away those he needed to negotiate with (how you you react to a self important jerk who was rude, condescending and demanding), could not figure out what supplies were needed and bought things in the wrong amounts, was a horrible cook, etc. and got irritated and defensive when criticized claiming that the tasks were beneath.

One member left very shortly after Red, and apparently tried to find him before leaving, the rest kind of enabled the sages incompetence by not splitting up the tasks like a proper group and letting him have his way.

Eventually the martial artist gets fed up with their lack of progress and leaved to search for red,

A while later the hero finds out about something and leaves with the assassin the sage contracted to replace Red and the assassin's pet spider

the spider is wiser then most of the hero party and definitely the sage

in search of it.

When the hero leaves the sage has a melt down and snaps

he needs to be a part of the hero family to rebuild his noble house, they lost their lands and rank because his great grandfather turned traitor and betrayed their nation, his families past glory seems to be a large part of his ego issues

and proceeds to track her down by extremely unethical means.
