Really bad examples. To start, the Sage we've seen is combat-oriented, and a huge ass. How can you not see an ego the size of a continent as dysfunction? All the rest are basically railroading someone into a specific lifestyle. Being forced into a life is shit. Logic dictates roughly half of the population is unhappy with their 'protection'. Yet they have no choice, they have to deal with it. It's funny that you compare it to a caste system, which have historically been proven to be utter shit.
There is always a job for someone to do in our reality, it's just that most people don't want to do the jobs. There are always shitty, dangerous jobs for those desperate enough. The 'protection' is not 'providing people with a role', it's taking away free will. Imagine really wanting to be a teacher, but you have an unsuitable 'protection'. Like 'Fighter' maybe, making you an unwilling bully. You literally can't teach young kids unless you totally suppress 'Fighter'. Now, in our reality people still have different advantages and obstacles, but with enough effort most anyone can be at least competent in what they're passionate about. Barring any disabilities or conditions. But even then there are tons of options. The 'protections' at most offer you branches of the same career. Instead of losing some options, you are left with only some options.
The 'protection' is always a curse, since it forces you into a mold. If your mind and 'protection' line up, the blessing is that the mind fits the 'protection'. Not the other way around.
