Really bad examples. To start, the Sage we've seen is combat-oriented, and a huge ass. How can you not see an ego the size of a continent as dysfunction? All the rest are basically railroading someone into a specific lifestyle. Being forced into a life is shit. Logic dictates roughly half of the population is unhappy with their 'protection'. Yet they have no choice, they have to deal with it. It's funny that you compare it to a caste system, which have historically been proven to be utter shit.

There is always a job for someone to do in our reality, it's just that most people don't want to do the jobs. There are always shitty, dangerous jobs for those desperate enough. The 'protection' is not 'providing people with a role', it's taking away free will. Imagine really wanting to be a teacher, but you have an unsuitable 'protection'. Like 'Fighter' maybe, making you an unwilling bully. You literally can't teach young kids unless you totally suppress 'Fighter'. Now, in our reality people still have different advantages and obstacles, but with enough effort most anyone can be at least competent in what they're passionate about. Barring any disabilities or conditions. But even then there are tons of options. The 'protections' at most offer you branches of the same career. Instead of losing some options, you are left with only some options.

The 'protection' is always a curse, since it forces you into a mold. If your mind and 'protection' line up, the blessing is that the mind fits the 'protection'. Not the other way around.

I would like to applaud your excellent appraisal of the situation.

This story set some rather horrific rules for its world, but I'm interested in seeing what the author can do to flip this around.

Same, it's a really interesting framework. All good story builds on conflict after all. Having both internal and external conflict be something natural, something compelled, is pretty good worldbuilding.

I agree with almost everything you have said but i think they have even less freewill. I mean if someone has cook skill its not that even if they want to be a teacher skill forces them to be a cook. It because of that skill they want to be a cook to begin with. Aside from the freewill thing its pretty balanced if you ask me. For example figher skill makes you stronger but it also makes you more agressive. Upsides and downsides. It's still shitty dont get me wrong but it simply that kind of world.

@cor3zone Ares is a basketcase, but that has more to do with his upbringing and circumstances. A big ego doesn't necessarily make your life miserable, and the worst compulsion from the protection is the lust for knowledge and fame, which can be really helpful.

You say being forced into a life is shit, but that's only from your perspective. Plenty of people yearn for that kind of structure, the feeling of knowing where they belong and what they work for. Lots of people nowadays lack that kind of structure, and that usually leads to radicalization. Wastrels are not good for society as a whole. The divine protection system makes sure that everyone has an outlet in life, even those with "cruel" divine protections. One of the most important characters in the story is an assassin, yet she is a good girl who uses her divine protection for good, doesn't feel burdened by her compulsions, and leads a fruitful life.

And you're saying people don't want to do those jobs? Not true. The problem is not that no one wants to do jobs, but that no one wants to do said jobs at the price listed. Everyone has a price. If I had infinite money, I could find a price point to convince you to be a sewer cleaner or crocodile feeder or so on. And some people are willing to do those jobs for cheap, because they either like or need the job. Yes, there are weird people out there. I remember a couple of mosquito experts who would willingly let mosquitoes devour their arms for demonstrative purposes as well as scientific endeavors. The divine protection system helps out by making people feel good about doing these jobs. A garbage collector in that world would still be doing an undesirable job, but they'd get a dopamine rush from doing the job.

@icekatze @cor3zone - it's kind of okay that gods make some people into sages or heroes. The real problem is, apparently they make some people into troublesome jobs like "thief" or "brawler". Which is why a city has a thieves' guild, and nobody is doing anything about it. Because stealing is their god-given job, not something disruptive for society.
But the really silly part is, everybody has to fight people or monsters to get better at their job. This makes me suspect the gods are incompetent at their job, and just stole the system from their favorite RPG without thinking. I hate it when people forget to think.

If you want a spoiler
it was a doppleganger that attacked Lit's territory and killed her master. He only ate a hand of the Ex party member, so the memory isn't perfect. He hasn't shown up because he knows that Red will spot him to be fake if he appears carelessly in front him.

@PzArrow nope, it appears where it supposed to be.

Lit greeting the guards "Hello/Hi" with smiling face makes me remind of Aqua from Konusuba from feinting innocence or when she was with her believer....

So from how it looks, Ademi used the drug to change his violent protection. After that, he calmed down and apologized for his earlier behavior. As evident in his statement to Tanta that "it's all fine now." Meaning he changed his protection so he won't get violent.

Perhaps the drug has a side effect were it causes a strong relapse back to the original protection. Which caused Ademi to lash out. But even so, a part of him was so determined to change, instead of using the blade of the axe, he used the handle to curb his impulse.

But the thief used an axe instead of his dagger too.

God’s a real ass in this story huh. Even the good protections like hero are a pain/debilitating if said user doesn’t actually want to be a hero
