Oh i know, the humans are like mosquitos eating the trees blood and the they get squashed when the tree notices. It doesnt happen every time because you won't kill a mosquito every time you try.

That's a good interpretation of it Snakeykid1. There's also the dangers of drug addiction angle.

Extremely disappointed. How do you not "get caught"? Those things teleport randomly even indoors with perfect precision. Pretty braindead way to explain it. Even the explanation i came up with on the spot while reading it is better: the honey acts on your reward centers in the brain so strongly that getting seen eating it causes a chemical reaction between the honey and the blood it causes the user's inside to evaporate so fast only the keratin layer of the skin is left. The interesting part would be the different meaning of "being caught" or "being seen" for each user, based on their psychology. Shame for being addicted, guilt for stealing the honey, regret for not letting others eat it, all of these things (and many more) would cause someone to feel like they've been "caught" while eating it at some point. It would be a better metaphor for addiction as well, chronicling how there are countless ways for addiction to ruin your character in an interesting way.
Ironically the worst guy of the group would survive the longest because he already has a low shame/guilt/fear threshold, becoming the dealer. He would eventually get his fair share nonetheless one way or another.

Snakeykid1 We can't but "It" can as it teleports and instantly crushes anyone eating it's sap. It's too fast to even dodge or outrun...

The way the title's pun was translated is genius. Way better than just "Smashed"

why does it have to be a metaphor? it can just be a sci-fantasy story of an alien plant. Addiction ruining somebody doesnt happen in the blink of an eye like the characters are being splattered here. The proper way of not getting caught must be known only to the natives who collect the honey. Stop trying to find a metaphor everywhere. Otherwise there wouldnt be any mystery in any of Ito's stories.
