I kind of wish they did what Levi did to one of the Kenny's soldiers - I wish they hookshotted Annie with their ODM gear and dragged her into the underground...

Even in the anime I had not seen this coming! It's so brilliant though!

Edit: If the plan was to capture her than just cut off her hands while the squad restrained her? Why even take her to the tunnel when the roof was so small a titan would just pop out. I dont understand why people in this manga overcomplicate things sometimes

I like this arc tho theres lots of great little subtle emotional moments like her slipping the ring on and eren's anger, eren learning the difference between trust and blind faith, etc. The action in the forest scene was amazing and the scout system was really interesting

I guess now's a good time to start wondering who Annie's father is... some higher-up in the Center who's been training her this way all her life, and why? The story of corruption from the 'high-brass' is starting to expose itself here...

@giblow20 getting wounded is how they transform and transforming in the tunnel would slow her down in being able to react to attackers.

Don't know if all this is answered after this chapter though.

@brandonvu1997 titan shifting requires self harm and intent. As seen in next chapter the tunnel roof is made of one layer of old bricks. You could maybe say that the corps could have overwhelmed her while she was getting out of the tunnel but she has hardening. If she was aware of the trap she would immediately harden and counter the ambush.

@Giblow20 You can see in the very next chapter (page 11) that the third squad is in a section of the tunnel that goes deeper underground, that's probably where they were going to lead her. About cutting off limbs, that seems extremely risky, say someone tries to cut off her hand and instead of defending herself she aims the hand at the person's blade with the intent of it cutting her, does that count as a self-injury or not? It probably does, because titan powers are about intent. So the much safer option is to restrain her first and then cut her limbs later if necessary. Cutting off limbs after restraining wouldn't be a problem because intention requires an ability to act, which she can't do once restrained, whereas if you try to cut her first, she can intend for the cut to happen by choosing to not defend herself/throwing herself at the attack.

@anon4172 no, they cut her arms off before she is aware. A group of people were able to sneak up and grab her. What im suggesting is that they come down and slice her instead. There obviously would be no chance to react. Clearly restraint isnt the safer option because u literally see it failing next chapter. Restraint only works if u r sure they have no options, but titan shifters like Annie have things like the ring etc

@Giblow20 There would be time to react because they're using a flare to signal to the attackers. She actually has more time to act than the attackers because she is looking directly at Armin and can see his movements and the flare on his hand before the attackers can see/hear the signal. They also have no reason to think she wouldn't notice people sneaking up on her since she is a trained soldier. And she does notice and does react (chapter 32, page 3), if one of the attackers had a blade, she could've simply thrown herself at the blade instead of trying to run.

>restraint isnt the safer option because u literally see it failing next chapter

All plans have a chance to fail, a plan failing has no bearing on the risk mitigation associated with it because the amount of knowledge you have before and after execution is not the same. Take the ring as an example, they have no way of knowing she has that ring before executing the plan, therefore it cannot be taken into account when planning.
