The word used in the official English version of the light novel in volume 3 chapter 4 has him call the king a "royal fool" .

There is a noticable difference between how commoners and nobles speak in light novel, and assuming it's not just the English translations and also the intent of the author, then retard definitely does not fit. The nobility use more flowery language and references/quotes.

So “buffoon” would fit better than “retard”, then? As a posher label of idiocy, myes?

Going to be honest, in-between the month delay between releases, all the different characters, and I follow multiple mangas.

I have no idea who is who anymore outside of Olivia. Who by name is on which side. The idiot incompetent king is on the enemy side I'm guessing.

The "big three generals" are on Olivia team? The fancy new evervictorious guy is the enemy side? Which side is the direwolves now. Who's leading the Knights of Sol again?

The idiot king is on MC's side. He's an expert in economics, but has zero military knowledge. The problem is, he refuses to listen to the military experts he has. He insists on managing military affairs. And because he's a coward, he keeps his strongest army, the First Army, in the rear to protect the capital and himself, even though the First Army is desperately needed on the front lines. Because of this, the Kingdom is in a dire situation. Now, he's only willing to send the First Army to the front lines after being "threatened" by Marshal Cornelius, the king's right-hand man, that if the king refuses, Cornelius will resign.

The Big Three Generals are on the enemy side (the Empire): Marshall Graden, General Rosenmarie, and General Felix.

The Evervictorious General (Marshall Cornelius) is on Olivia's side.

Weird take. You're right languages and meanings change over time, but I thought it sounded out of place for a general to say, even one today. Though looking at recent events, maybe not.
