I think it's more like she's learned how to read Claudia after being on her bad side on and off. She STILL can't read the room when it comes to her superiors which Ashton can. Poor Claudia has become the closest thing to a leash for the mad (cute) dog Olivia.

Maybe because it's always the best guarded place on a battlefield ?
By that I mean you have to go through the entire battlefield.
Worse than that, in a fantasy world officers are generally the strongest soldiars on the field, so it's even more a suicidal mission to attack the enemy officers while there are still normal soldiars.
Olivia is an exception though.
