I was thinking that, at least in the "Chinese palace intrigue" works I've read, concubines and courtesans for inner palaces were recruited after thorough examinations which included noble backgrounds, arts, protocol and all that nonsense; and needed quite important backing to be eligible at all. While I agree the courtesans were professional mistresses, you are missing the point. What set the courtesan apart from the common prostitute was the skillset. They were not expected to have it, they had it so they were courtesans.
