For the language used, I think they're going to enter more like maids and Ladies-in-waiting for the real courtesans and concubines. Sort of like Maomao in The Apothecary Diaries. Now they should find a powerful mistress to protect them in the meanwhile and all set.
The language used was them entering the palace as servants and courtesans, not servants for courtesans. I couldn't say if the translation is correct or not, but that's what it says. That said, I'm hoping you're right and it's not just more of the same ntr bait.

I was thinking that, at least in the "Chinese palace intrigue" works I've read, concubines and courtesans for inner palaces were recruited after thorough examinations which included noble backgrounds, arts, protocol and all that nonsense; and needed quite important backing to be eligible at all. None was asked and Sakura doesn't have them anyway, so I guessed they had to enter for the service door, so to speak.

But they're not safe, if anything they're even worse than if they were concubines. Servants had next to no rights in the inner palaces and they could end pretty badly just by existing at the wrong time of the day.

I am glad he did not blindly pursue her and hopefully won't, it would just be frustrating...

But he probably will, after he gets an SOS from the whisper system or whatever, sad

"I mean sure all these negative things in the past arc happened, and they almost got raped, and now more negative things are happening in this arc, and they just got fingered, but it's okay because TSA's make sense because prostate exams, also they're trying to sneak in as courtesans/prostitutes (surely it will go as planned), but it's not a big deal! Stop being negative."

Not gonna knock you for this crazy cope, but I just don't think it's unreasonable for people to find this sort of stuff to be annoying. As far as I'm concerned the story has been pretty meh. But the lewds are really good, so I'm still in. :smugchisato:
I dont think its really fair to call it a cope. I seriously doubt the author is gonna go thru with having any of the princesses (let alone the first one introduced in the story and who can be considered the FMC) be raped or anythin. Plus like, again, its not like it was a dude doing the finger blastin and getting some sort of sexual gratification out of it, so I dont rlly see the supposed NTR bait or whatnot.

I think that's actually an inspection to get into the palace, not just the city, based on when the flashback ends.
When you look at the background, the inspection has it white, when they enter the city and talk to merchant it's black and when that woman talks about ghost it's white again.
So, yeah. The inspection take place when they are hired as servants for palace.

Given the fact we just got out of the dwarf princess being humiliated and nearly raped, and now we're going straight into the other princess being humiliated, inserted, and now applying to become a servant/courtesan (prostitute), I don't think it's unreasonable for people to look at the way the story is going negatively...
Courtesans were not exactly prostitutes.
They were "hired", and valued, not to spread their legs but more for their companionship skills, ie. singing, dancing, playing instruments, talking/listening etc. etc.
Neither Sakura nor Nia has those. Well, the Sakura, as s princess, could be educated in fine arts, but since she is a princess, I would say she is knowledgeable enough to apply just to become servant.

No, quite the opposite. Courtesans were the highest ranking professional mistresses (prostitutes). They absolutely were hired/given (sometimes through political/arranged marriages) to spread their legs, and history backs that up. Literally every definition of a courtesan will tell you that they assume the role of a high ranking prostitute, because that's essentially what they were. The skillsets you mention here were expected of courtesans because they were of high rank and deportment, not because it was an alternative to spreading their legs, otherwise they wouldn't be a courtesan.

While I agree the courtesans were professional mistresses, you are missing the point. What set the courtesan apart from the common prostitute was the skillset. They were not expected to have it, they had it so they were courtesans.
Man hire prostitute to have sex with her, man hire a courtesan to entertain him. There is important nuancé to this.

Also, don't read to much the dictionaries, while they are not wrong, they are often not quite right.

You incorrectly said they were not there to spread their legs. This is patently false. I'm suggesting you look up a dictionary definition for your sake, not mine, because it seems you're unfamiliar with what courtesans were historically used for, and still are. Anyone with any modicum of knowledge of history knows what courtesans were used for, their skillsets, etc. It's not really debatable, and frankly bizarre that you think they weren't. Their primary function without a doubt is to spread their legs. Full stop. Skillsets (education, writing, singing, dancing) are a secondary function of courtesans that separated them in class from your average prostitute. That is the nuance here. I'm not interested in your personal feelings on the matter, just the facts. We'll agree to disagree here.

I worded my first reply wrong. Of course they spread their legs, that's given by their profession. But courtesans were skilled entertainers, where the sex was only part of their repertoire. There is like thousand examples from history which prove my point.

All you did here was disagree with me thinking you were more informed, invented a point of contention (skillsets) of which I never was arguing against in the first place, realized I was still correct, and then backtracked and said you "worded it wrong." Give me a break, dude.

Who are you making this "point" to? My very first response should have been the end of this conversation, as I literally tell you that skillsets and class are what separated a regular prostitute from a courtesan. No, I'm not missing any points here. You are: This is a manga that will portray courtesans by the fact that they spread their legs. That's the point. It's called context, and that is precisely the context I used when I correctly refer to them as prostitutes. There are levels. There are ranks. I never said that courtesans weren't skilled entertainers, I said they were prostitutes. And they were. High class ones, with skillsets, that spread their legs. Once again, history proves this.

Imagine so confidently and arrogantly trying to educate me about "nuance" (while making false statements) and yourself not understanding the nuance when I say "courtesans (prostitutes)" with relation to the ecchi manga that we are reading.

Seriously dude?
Imagine being so self-centered that when someone elaborate on something you said, you then create a point of contention, argument with wrong facts and then, when you lose that argument you go on tirade how the other guy wronged you.

I said they were not exactly prostitutes, because they were sought out because of their companion/entertainer skill, not just because they spread their legs. So, in the context of the manga we are reading, both Sakura and Nia cannot apply for this position in the palace.

Yes, seriously. I didn't "lose" the argument, lmao. You invented one, and then lost it yourself. Nothing I said was incorrect here while you on the other hand are consistently talking out of your ass and backtracking. And now you're literally just copying what I said? You trolling? Because you're doing a garbage job at it.

You said they were not hired to spread their legs.
I corrected you.
You said I don't understand that they were skilled.
I corrected you.
You said I still didn't understand that they were skilled.
I corrected you.

Do you even know what a prostitute is? They are prostitutes. All the literature says as much. All the history says as much. Educate yourself on the nuance you value so much. A courtesan isn't a courtesan for free. They engage is prostitution. Being a prostitute doesn't only mean you work on the streets and are of a low class or caste, you imbecile.
