Ok but then what we're talking about is surrounding the sex act with symbolism to make it special. Like a fancy dinner, a room with a view, a bed that vibrates, etc. And while you can pay to do those things at a fancy hotel, you can also do similar things for much cheaper. Take a scenic walk, buy some flowers, wear your dress-up clothing, cook the fancy dinner. Then do it in your bed like a normal couple and save $200.

And that's not even getting into how different people will get unique symbol value from those scenarios. You can find a person who thinks getting raw-dogged over the coffee table is more authentic and special than setting up a theatrical bed of roses would be.

I'm not denying that symbolic value is a real thing, just like commodity value is. But where commodity value relies on real material conditions like the cost of a hotel room or a lobster tail, the symbolic value of those things is much more arbitrary. I'd argue that you can decide how much value to place on them.
