A bit of correction: the 早 in hayameshi might be more accurate to mean "fast". Fast eater. Early eater sounds awkward as hell. Nonetheless thank you for the new chapter, I love that 深夜食堂 having new updates this frequent.

I know it's the typical "tough love" or whatever so the dude can grow a bit on his own, but I won't lie, when sensei shouted at him, while we the readers knew the student (supposedly) had a rough childhood made me tear a tiny bit.

I forgot to add this in the afterword, but...

There are real stakes to Nagasawa's rank issue. The reason why Hayashi wanted to give him space to grow was because in the world of shogi is because he wants Nagasawa to officially turn professional. All ranks below 4-dan are considered amateur, but 1-dan to 3-dan are considered "apprentice professionals".

That said, for males one needs to win through a complex system called "Shoreikai" under the age of 26 and below to be considered "professional", but females have it easier, depending on the association (26 years old for Japan Shogi Association, 46 years old for Ladies Professional Shogi Association)

Even then, there are ways to go professional once you go past the age limit, but there are not a lot of people who have successfully done such a feat. Which means, if Nagasawa lost his chance, he would have to remain an amateur (in title) in shogi forever.

Is 4-dan at 25 a big deal considering it's still semi-pro?

I'm just comparing it to chess where it's normal to see teenagers in the top 20 pro rankings.

Shogi isn't like chess in the sense that you could go up and down rankings like you would in chess (I'm referring to the elo system)

In shogi, your rank is permanent, and you can't go down a rank even if you lose. That's why Nagasawa stagnated at 3-dan and didn't get himself demoted. The only thing that matters I suppose that he moves himself upward before 26 but now that he is a 4-dan, he is free to go up as he like

Sorry for the tangent, but to answer your question, I would say it is
