Nice to see this one still going.
I dunno - I realize Lillian has something going on with her, but it really just feels like she wants Al to be around and by her side and to actually pay attention to her, and she's acting out in escalating ways in order to get him to look her way.
And for his part, it's clear Al is taking Lillian for granted and always putting everything else, no matter what it is, over giving her the time of day. And worse, he tells her to just sit still at home and wait for him, like she should simply live her life according to his schedule and whatever meager scraps of time and focus he's willing to give her.
Yeah, Lillian's the one cavorting with pirates and stealing things and making a general mess of stuff that causes actual logistical headaches and trouble for the navy, but....it's like Al learned all of the wrong lessons from that Pirate Incident when they were kids, and is trying to shove Lillian inside a gilded birdcage under the guise of "keeping her safe" when 1) it's clear she's capable of taking care of herself at least a little, and 2) it's completely ignoring her wishes and removing any agency from her.
It's really hard for me to sympathize with Al in that sense. Lillian feels like she'd only ever get more needy regardless of how much time they spent together, but he's making no effort to meet her even part way, most of the time, and it's only going to deteriorate and get worse and worse as this goes on.
Which, does make it interesting to read, because I want to see what the "point of no return" looks like for them and I kinda want to see Al be forced to do something like actually severely injure Lillian as a result of his actions.
But at this point I'm more invested in watching Al suffer the long game of his choices in life, because I believe he really does care about Lillian; just not in a healthy way, not in the way she wants him to, and it feels more likely to get one (or both) of them killed than achieve any sort of happy ending.
