Hey all - today's (tonight's) chapter is 測定/Measurements.

I wanna start off with this: there's a thought bubble that I couldn't for the life of me understand on page 13 (the page that's only thought bubbles). The way translation usually goes, I get the gist of the sentence, then spend a good ten minutes or so chiseling it into mediocre English. Sometimes I sleep on it, but waiting a day didn't help on this one either, so I made up something that fit what I did understand and proceeded with that with the hope that it didn't impact the overall tone/meaning of the inner monologue.

I hope someone can elucidate though - it'll help improve the translation, but it'd also help me better my Japanese (for the five more chapters to come). I've transcribed the panel and put the translated version below. I've bolded the line in question:

だから簡単に切り捨てる傾向があるんだよな
それを一途とか純粋と呼べば聞こえはいいが
下手すると周りを傷つけて敵を作りかねない
雨井が全く協調性がないと思わなにが
もっと色んなことを経験して色んな人間に興味持ってくれると俺も安心なんだけどな

And so she has this tendency to simply cut people out.
It'd be nice if she were more upfront about it,
Code:
<- bullshit line
but if she isn't careful, she'll end up hurting the feelings of the people around her, and likely make some enemies along the way.
It's not that I think she's incapable of cooperating with others,
but it'd put me at ease if she'd open her mind and show interest in different people.

Anyway, today's the release date for KH3! Maybe I'll finally take a break from scanlating like I always say I'll do! But then again, I might also turn on my PS4, go "Wow, that's a pretty fucking good opening theme!", play, like, an hour, and then never pick it up again. Why do we lose interest in the things the moment we can afford them? Oh to be a kid again.

See y'all... on Friday?

I wrote a really nice comment. But I wasn't loged in, so it disappeard. :(

But in fact all what I wanted to say is 'thank you for the new chapter'!
It makes me as happy as a child playing a new game ;)

@eviljackspicer @Sakai (and @ everyone else) thanks y'all. Unfortunately Amazon says there's something wrong with my shipment, which I take to mean "lol don't order the day before dumbass".

@eviljackspicer Not to sound desperate, but I was half-expecting you to respond to the thing with the bubble I couldn't translate. Hopefully someone gets back to me on that one (unless it's, like, 100% fine).

During Amai's interaction with the drama club, for some reason I started imagining what it would feel like if the drama kids were the main characters and we had never seen Amai before as this was her first appearance in the manga. I can see why people think she's a tad prickly without knowing her more funny/childish side.

The comment "she looks like she can see ghosts" was funny.

Interacting with everyone in the drama club she actually kind of reminded me of the destructive princess in Maou-jou de Oyasumi. Something about her single-mindedness, plus they look sort of similar.

@Purplelibraryguy shoot, you're right. Now it'd be cuter if she were in love with the Demon Lord (obvi the Demon Lord is in love with her).

Maybe it's a mix between the princess in Maou-jou and the the zealousness of the maid from Duke of Death/死神坊ちゃん (though I'm probably making that comparison bexause they're both done by Meraki 😅).

I admittedly only work as a proofreader, not as a translator, but if I had to make sense of this line, I'd try looking at the context.
What's not clear in this case, however, is whether the line in question starts a new (although related) train of thought for Shiota-sensei, or is a direct continuation of the previous one. So either Amai-chan might possibly hurt other people's feelings because of her lack of interest/trust (which for some reason sounds less likely to me), or she might hurt others because of the contents of this line. Can you tell which of the above is true here?

それを一途とか純粋と呼べば聞こえはいいが
If I'm not mistaken that translates to "It would be good if she showed a more earnest or genuine appearance", so I'd say your improvisation isn't too far from it.
There's no need to change it in my opinion.
Thanks for the work, I'm really liking this comic.

I think it's something along the lines of:
“Maybe it would be better to call it being direct about it.”
/ “Even if you could see it in a positive way and call it being direct.”

(I'm not a Japanese expert, mind you.)

Thanks for your work! I'm looking forward to the game too!!

@suchtla @GipoScribantino @pip25 thanks for the feedback!

@pip25 How I understood Sensei's monologue is that Amai is pretty dismissive of people in general, and usually does so without getting to try to know them too much. If she were to express herself, her tactlessness (i.e. 下手すると) would likely hurt other people's feelings. And I guess having her interact with the drama club this chapter drove home how closed off she is to people that aren't sensei.

I see, so Shiota-sensei does begin a separate thought with that line. In that case, judging merely from the context and what we've seen in the manga so far, I'd say @suchtla 's version makes the most sense here. As far as I can recall Amai tends to speak her mind, sometimes in a very blunt manner, so "being more upfront" is unlikely to be something she needs to achieve. On the other hand, this bluntness is also something that makes it harder for her "to cooperate with others", which leads nicely to the sentences that come after this one. So if I had to phrase it, it would be something like this:
"Also, while you could say she's only being honest, if she isn't careful she'll end up hurting the feelings of the people around her, and likely make some enemies along the way."

@pip25 that does sound much better. Now what I'm really confused by is what 呼べば聞こえ means versus just 呼べば (or 呼べると/んだら?) which I feel would've gotten the same point across.

Admittedly I'm better at interpreting than I am at writing Japanese.

edit: I just realized how to parse the sentence. Holy shit:

一途とか純粋とよべば/聞こえはいいが
To call it wholehearted or straightforward / would be sugarcoating it (or equivalent phrase to express "聞こえはいい/sounds nice/has a nice ring to it"). Or maybe "Call it straightforward, call it wholehearted, call it whatever you want,".

This whole time I didn't recognize the 聞こえはいい part was separate. Guess that's why I'm a Japanese learner. Or maybe I really, really need to take a break from scanlating.

Hope y'all enjoyed this episode of red_bean_casserole learns Japanese.

Oh, that does make a lot of sense! So it's basically "You can say she's just being honest, upfront or whatever, but ultimately if she's not careful etc. etc." Kinda similar, but the tone is very different.
Thanks for sharing this with us! It might be just me, but I feel figuring out these weird sentences is perhaps the most frustrating, but also the most rewarding part of finalizing a script. ;)
