It's a part of Japanese culture. Finishing your food shows respect to the farmers, hunters, cooks, etc, who worked hard to provide it. It's why they say "Itadakimasu" (thanks for the food) before eating! If you don't finish, it's considered wasteful and rude.

I like this series but this arc is one of the dumbest ones I've read in years. I can't understand how an editor approved the idea of that SSF trash for the original novel.
