I get what they were going for but the bear is too human to sell the idea. If she is fully capable of connecting with and interacting with the bear as a normal person there is no reason for her to have basically neglected her daughter.

For me it's actually really easy to understand as I'm somewhat similar to the mother. Maybe I'm as 'autistic' as this mother or whatever, but being able to connect and interact has nothing to do with how much I love the other person. With most people I always feel like there's a wall that just can't be overcome. They don't understand me and I don't understand them and a lot of time conversation just tends to peter off. But with people I can feel connected with I would be a chatterbox and life of the party. Some of my friends are very surprised when I tell them that with my family I'm known as very stone faced and quiet.

But I do still find the resolution weird. I highly doubt anyone that's not similar in thinking would understand and the daughter's pov clearly show she doesn't, reaction like the comments here are definitely more expected than this. I got the feeling that the author is the mother (or know a mother like that) and wrote this as a wishful scenario.
