Basically a throwback to the anime when Maya confessed that she had to keep pushing harder in order to maintain her no.1 spot despite the clear gap between her and the rest of the cast.
The shine of the one true cream of the top is easily commensurate with the pressure one has to withstand in retaining that position, hence the Maya's obsession (or weird dream, perhaps even nightmare as the chapter implies).
The ghost on the stage is probably a metaphor for those who are chasing after Maya, most obvious one is Claudine Sajou, and we all know their story from the main show near the endgame.
Simply a majestic chapter with so much subtlety behind it.
