@filuth The author making her play up her shoujo manga rival trope... the bitch character who put down the heroine, only in this one, it's a reversal/subversion, and she is actually heads over heels for the rival.

Think of her put down not as the romance part of the manga, but the comedic part.

thank you for the chapter I love this series. Its interesting getting to see how Kimura's low self esteem processes this series of events. From her finding out that the person who sets the bar as the standard for what sort or type of girls are acceptable to go out with her crush is a paragon of the big gay. To said childhood friend of her crush while confessing her undying devotion to Kimura also rubs in the fact that there is this massive gap between Kimura and her crush that she has no chance of crossing. To in this chapter Kimura getting the confidence boost from both her friend Tomoe as well as an additional boost when upon her accepting her desire to someday be able to love herself she gives her rival a yuri induced heart attack/stroke. Its an interesting journey these two have ahead of them. Kimura realizing that instead of trying to meet the standards of public opinion she should just be herself and not let others stifle her dreams and hopes to Hiyama's attempts to appeal to her love and be able to triumph over her biggest opponent her crush's chronic low self esteem and strong belief that they aren't and will never be good enough.
I don't think the issue is that Kimura keep's forgetting that Hiyama is attracted to her its that she wants to at long last be able to make her feelings heard to her crush and yet she's constantly reminded by various people including Hiyama herself that according to public opinion you have to meet a specific standard to even talk to the guy and the one who set that bar and that the rest of her school thinks is best suited for him is his lesbian childhood friend who while setting the bar has both no interest in him and also seems to be very aware the standard exists, that she created it, and that she continues to reinforce it almost like she wants to keep this barrier around for Kimura struggle against and keep her in the available zone. I think that's part of why Kimura is constantly intimidated by Hiyama because despite knowing what she does about Hiyama even she thinks that Hiyama is the perfect match for her crush.
Also Hiyama better be careful once she gets out of the nurse's office because it looks like she has a second rival for Kimura's love.

A girl that was attractive to begin with finds "self confidence" after applying makeup, truly inspiring
