You're forgetting the MC's power of growing anything. That includes bottled potions. He really only needs a few samples and he can grow as many as he wants. His production costs are basically ZERO. Therefore, even paying 2 gold coins per bottle nets him a profit because he can either use it or re-sell it for 7 gold coins.

There would be no point for the MC to even become a merchant if he depended on his skill to grow money. Plus, he also knows that suddenly infusing huge amounts of gold coins will undermine the economy, causing gold to be worth less and inflation to rise. Plus it would be extremely suspicious when people start asking where he's getting all that money. The only thing the king knows is that the MC can grow crops incredibly fast. If he knew that the MC could grow ANYTHING, including weapons, potions and money, then the MC would be under lock-and-key forever.

It's one thing for a single person to put out large amounts of coins for a single purchase. It's quite another to do it frequently with no explanation of where that money is coming from.

It's questionable whether he actually needs anything anymore. Being a merchant, gathering money... with his skill and the items he already has, he can live a downright opulent life without interacting with any other human beings.

You misunderstood. I'm saying if he just relied on his skill ALONE, he'd be under suspicion. A merchant is a good cover, BUT people are still going to wonder how he's able to buy stuff in comparison to how he makes a profit. You saw how surprised the people were at how cheap his prices were in Chapter 3. You have to follow the money.
