The shoe in the movie is actually made out of candy (liquorice IIRC), but Charlie (Chaplin) made sure to reshoot the scene so many times that they felt like they would choke on eating the same candy over and over again, just to get the right expressions.

Which is what is happening to us as well, we're getting an extra serving when we thought we were full, just so we can choke on it..
