He wasn't MIA for 20 years voluntarily. It's a time travel/Bad Future Arc, and he teams up with his daughters adult selves in order to fight his way back to the present and change the future/be with his family.

In fact, he quite reasonably has a mental breakdown once his daughters tell him exactly how much time that fissure in space-time cost him. If it wasn't for Adult Noah slapping some sense into him he'd probably have wasted a lot of time crying over his wife's grave.

The Silver Dragon Clan was invaded. One of the defeated dragon kings created a time rift to destroy the clan. This time rift could only be stopped with great power. So, before it grew larger and consumed the entire clan, Leon sacrificed himself. As a result, he was transported 20 years into the future.

Spoiler: but don't worry

Together with his now-adult daughters, they sent Leon back to the past—so he didn’t really miss anything (except for the six months he spent in the future). Also, his daughters said that time is linear, so by going back to the past, it’s not like Leon abandoned them a second time. :v

So, he had a hole in his heart when he was captured/betrayed and was strong enough to plow her. In order to keep him alive to exact her "revenge" she sacrificed her heart scale, basically a huge mana regulator that allows her to use dragon mana at full steam. It's not really clear if it regrows over time or what, but for now it's made it difficult for her to draw out her full power without killing her(which directly goes into the 20 year coma/time travel thing). It drastically reduced her lifespan and made her vulnerable to attacks from other dragons. The regulator is why he can't draw out his power at all, as 90% of his mana is flowing into it to keep his ass alive. Their bond tattoo(s) actually acts as a mana battery so he stores power slowly into it. The regulator allows him to reach levels he couldn't possibly reach before, but it takes a long ass time to recharge. At her most honest, you see that she didn't want him to have to fight ever again, that she wanted to protect and cherish him because she understood how deep he was betrayed. To the point where she's willing to sacrifice her entire kingdom just to keep him from fighting.
