Maybe if I grew up in Japan, this arc would feel less weird?

If this were written for American audiences, what would the shinobi be, the daughter of a survivalist commune, or a new age witch? Or maybe they'd go with a native american spiritualist and it'd be just as awkward?
@icekatze

Pop-culture "ninjas" already exist in a lot of US superhero media. Batman got trained by the League of Assassins in the comics, Wolverine went against the Black Ninja Clan in the film, Daredevil got attacked by the Hand in the TV series. And then there's the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, living in the sewers under New York City.

If this was written for American audience, it would be either "main character goes to somewhere in Asia and meets ninjas" or "ninjas come from somewhere in Asia and meet main character" like in every superhero comic book ever.

Don't die, Tokimaru.

Ignore all the yuri shippers who don't mind Male characters getting killed. You do you, and get your waifu.

Okay, was the "that was another lifetime" just an awkward translation or was it supposed to mean they're locked in an eternal reincarnation battle or something like that?

You know, I would rather seeing Ai die than Tokimaru (just hope Teru doesn't inherit the sword). When you introduce a character that screams "fodder" from the moment he shows up, and raises a red flag this high two chapters later, you kind of just hope he actually survives.

... The heart of the rock?

It is an inanimate object. Rocks don't bleed. They don't have hearts.
This is stupid.
Too stupid.
I'm out.
