For the guy he was brainwashed after the fact as a way of the teacher trying to be a lizard and cutting off his tail to escape. We know this information because the student pretty much said and thought: "This has been going on for a long time I won't be punished anyway" it's only after everything fell apart that brainwashing came into effect.
