Seems strange though, in the last panel all three of them appear surprised about Monica's collapse. I think they just intended to bully her with the taste. Maybe Claudia messed with the leaves, since it was obvious Monica would be the only one served this particularly bitter tea.

The pages before, the girls are all surprised that Monica was able to drink it all.

"Are you serious? But it's so bitter."
"No way, I thought for sure she'd just choke on it."

So they definitely put something in there that was not intended to be consumed. Best case, they just got the dosage wrong.

I do not expect the best case. That would involve schoolgirls knowing anything about dosages.

My interpretation is that they just used different leaves for her, so it did produce drinkable tea, it just didn't suit the palate of refined noble ladies but was closer to the "mature" taste of the coffee Monica loves and that a third party messed with it.

Tbh they prob didnt think she would drink the entire thing they say it themself. Like clearly they put something in it to make it like you said taste weird have her spit it out and embarass her self but unknown to tvrm Monica os a silly goober who just soldier it and well that was bad
