I think the previous arc had some issues with conveyance, or an editor decided to make things clearer going forward. The author kept a lot of the backstory limited to really brief flashbacks which builds intrigue, but also a lot of the relationships seemed to be the complete opposite of what we're being shown now with Ellis' siblings in these much longer scenes.
