I would say it's pretty fucked up.


And it is.

BUT...

There are no buts.

Reading this makes me miserable and despairing of the human condition at large.

However, the plot was kind of interesting, and the elements of Buddhism and dharma or what the fuck ever and shit were neat.

I could barely follow the story though because the art kinda has that indistinct flavor where I wasn't really super sure which character was which sometimes, especially in the fucking cyberworld.

Anyway, I can't say I recommend it, but there was something there.

Oh is this some kinda loop ending? Seems poetic, idk. Like hell I can recommend this to anyone. It explores the very darkest impulses people have, without counterbalancing it with hope or love or family or some other innate human good. It shows ideas of enlightenment from Buddhism instead, but as a result seems kinda hopeless with regards to the human condition for regular folk. Maybe that’s just Buddhism, Houseki no Kuni also ended up pretty depressing.

Only in the sense that nothing has really changed for Konno. She's still a million miles away from ever attaining enlightenment. The final lines about calamity and boarding a ship are most likely in reference to the Buddha often comparing his teachings to a ship that helps beings cross over the flood of samsara, i.e. the endless cycle of birth and death, which also equals suffering.
