It can be both a shady gruesome profession, and a respectable business handled in broad daylight. A source of supposedly valuable companions, who look like skin and bones with dead eyes. Some MCs don't mind it, some dislike it yet still pay the merchant like a good customer.
It's actually extremely unusual for the MC to splat the merchant like this.

Yes, but my point was that someone that isn't performing the business in a respectable way saying that it's a "respectable business" is laughable at best.
EDIT: Selling goods is a respectable business, stealing someone elses goods and selling them is not.
