Ya. Hopefully we aren't supposed to sympathize with her later on. Morally grey protagonists can be good, but mass murder isn't excused by "daddy didn't love me".

Kind of a call back to Japanese conquest of China.
"We did it for the emperor!" and "we need land and resource for our nation escape poverty and stand up to Western power" is no excuse for what they did, nor were the Germans.

It looks like people are of the impression that she's irredeemable. But... she understands what she did wrong, and why, and (if given the chance) would atone for her crimes. The princess as she is now is not the monster she used to be; what use would 'punishment' be? The person who committed those crimes is not the person she is now. Her death would not resurrect those she killed.

I find her legitimately sympathetic.

And that's why I'm entirely sure this author is going to kill her.

Let's see how this goes...

@Degernase From https://www.beyondintractability.org/essay/types_of_justice#:~:text=This%20article%20points%20out%20that,All%20four%20of%20these%20are

> ...there are four different types of justice: distributive (determining who gets what), procedural (determining how fairly people are treated), retributive (based on punishment for wrong-doing) and restorative (which tries to restore relationships to "rightness.")

Would further punishment of the princess benefit the general welfare? No. Would it be fair to punish her for the actions she took as an emotionally abused teenager? No. Would it prevent her from taking actions that cause further harm? Possibly... but as her redemption arc shows, the whole point of her character development is that, independent of any further punishment, she doesn't want to perform actions like that again.

And of course, killing her wouldn't bring any of the people she'd killed back to life.

Stories that hold redemption vs revenge as a central theme, like this, are trying to demonstrate that specific concept. We instictively jump to wanting to see revenge porn, but revenge is pragmatically innefficient.

There's also a preventative aspect to punishments, people weigh risk vs reward both consciously and subconsciously. If the punishment (risk) is weak, people will more often be willing to take the gamble. Not only that, when people in a community, city (etc.) commit crimes without suffering significant consequences, it acts to demoralize everyone that's law abiding and makes them lose trust in both the system and the people around them.

Another thing, some actions are just too excessive to the point where it's hard to justify that a person can ever make up for their wrongdoing. And don't forget that rehabilitation and imprisonment comes with a significant cost (especially if the former is done properly).

Would further punishment of the princess benefit the general welfare?
Would it prevent her from taking actions that cause further harm? Possibly...
I'll answer your first question the same way you answered your second.

Would it be fair to punish her for the actions she took as an emotionally abused teenager?
Actually, yes. Everyone goes through some tough shit, some more than others. That doesn't absolve you from guilt nor does it rob you of your self-agency. But should age be kept in mind? Sure.

but as her redemption arc shows, the whole point of her character development is that, independent of any further punishment, she doesn't want to perform actions like that again.
Yeah now apply that reasoning to real life where you're not literally reading their innermost thoughts.

EDIT:
Also I'm generally not a fan of capital punishment, but when we're talking about things on the scale of war crimes or otherwise murdering people in the hundreds, yeah no one wants that person around.

Her being so obviously "sympathiable" actually begets a tough question....
If the MC's object of hate is so deflated, how will the author sustain the MC's plotline? Now that we don't wish for to be dangling at the edge of the sword, while possibly crying out evil things and revealing more aspects of the her "evil plot", what will there be? It actually makes me doubt that she's truly is so innocent (how can someone go from "I'm an unstoppable killing machine, FUCK the children." to -- "I'm just a little girl, woe is me~"?)

This chapter revealed so much, it's actually quite remarkable. The author either has quite the balls, or completely ran out of ideas and trying to squeeze out every tiny bit of intrigue possible.

@Degernase
Personally, I have 2 views on "justice":
Corrective, and Fatal.
If you're a "criminal", you should still have the chance to re-integrate into society.
If you're so fucked up that you're a clear menace to everyone around you with no chance at redemption, a bullet to the head it is.
And in most fiction works, honestly, with how over-the-top the villains are, a swift bullet to the head with 0% torture is best. No theatrics, no bullshit, just end the forest fire immediately and get on with it.

That being said, I can't really say the "villain" here fits the "Fatal" criterion...This comment has dragged on for long enough, so let's just say I agree with the politics of it all, especially her being such a prominent public character.
