I'm going to say that's his son with his ex wife and she is not just a higher up in the cult but it's founder through the kid, this probably doesn't make sense if I read the 1st chapter but I am too lazy to do that.

didn't he have a daughter? earlier his friend? /coworker mentioned some kinda 'tragedy' so i assume she died and the wife divorced him or disappeared

Yeah they explain what happened in the later chapters and it has nothing to do with what I said, I just didn't remember the first chapter so was going off with dumb theories.
