Soft delete chapters instead of deleting them entirely

  • As a user, I want to be aware of the chapters I have read so I can keep track of them—even if they were removed later.
  • As a user, I want soft-deleted chapters to remain marked as read so I don’t accidentally reread them when they’re re-uploaded.
  • As a user, I want to see that a chapter was removed so I understand why there's a sudden gap in the numbering. (either due to scanlator, DMCA concerns, etc.)
  • As a user, I want to know when a chapter has been replaced or updated, so I can decide whether to reread it.
  • As an admin, I want to retain old versions of chapters in a soft-deleted state for historical reference or rollback. (expired copyright protection)
I've forgotten to read so many manga because they just disappeared into the aether.

Q: What's next? / What about my read markers and comments?

An old v3 feature, allowing to show chapter metadata only without being able to actually read a chapter/access its images, is planned to re-release ASAP. This will include your read markers as well as comment threads.
This also means that, even if a reading progress/library exporter existed, it won't work until then. And no, before you ask I can't recommend one (feel free to recommend something to put here), but it looks like T10_ considers making one.”

Preferably add a "removal_reason" (or somesuch) field or tag, too.
Also would be good if uploaders could select a soft-deleted chapter as the origin of their new chapter, for if they updated a chapter by first deleting it (or it was deleted for breaking rules), which helps the part about informing users on whether to reread or not. Could also have a flag uploader sets on whether the update should warrant showing up in latest-updates feed. Like if they actually had missing pages that they added, they can set the flag. While if they just fixed some grammar it is probably best to leave it unchecked.

Keeping read markers and showing gaps would really help track what’s been read. Having a reason tag and update flag like Feha suggested would make it even clearer when chapters are replaced or removed.

now that it's implemented, it's not working for series that have chapters deleted for reasons other than the dmca
