That would depend on what you consider to be super long. Developing a new drug, as such, can easily take a decade, so the clinical trial for approval isn't super long in the big picture. Anything else but the clinical trial is merely a part of the drug development process itself. But of course drug manufacturers, being businesses, would rather start making money sooner than later, especially since the patent will expire in a set number of years, so the chances of making profit and compensate for the multiple millions spent in research and trials are time limited.

Nobody wants a repeat of Thalidomide, though.
