Thing is there's some hints that the mom is aware about something about Kaori. For example she reffered to him as Kaori- chan for the most parts in the earlier chapters but suddenly when in one the chapters after he spends alone time with her playing games and discussion about Nanami (iirc) she suddenly changes the pronouns in the middle of the chapter. From chan to san and continues calling Kaori-chan, Kaori-san and here thereafter as if shes found out about something like that she's aware he's a boy thus not calling him chan anymore as that's a feminine pronoun and also not calling him kun for the young boy (mainly)/young female pronoun. But instead san as that is gender neutral.
