When the teacher first met the wife, he just saw her as an annoying nuisance he had to deal with. The teacher actually didn't think of the wife as cute UNTIL she had an emotional freakout in front of him, whereupon he called her a persistent airhead, clearly aware she has issues. He wasn't attracted to her until that moment.

It's not about saving her, he is FULLY aware the wife is a walking disaster, that's what makes his dick hard.

He has been pretty consistent with his behavior so far, keeping everything by himself, hiding his real thoughts and pretty much walking over eggshells with every single word he speaks aloud... yet this time, the very moment glasses lady apologized for misunderstanding his family situation, he vented out an unmistakable proof of physical abuse... I think this might've been his equivalent of a scream for help.
