Which is a fair point, but maybe instead of sniping they try their hand at something no one has picked up yet. People have a right to be miffed when a new chapter comes up in their follows and it's instead poorly typeset MTL.

Also fair, I guess it's a matter of opinion how long should an AI translator wait until it's not considered snipe.
I'm not an expert on the matter nor want to be, but 4 chapters in the backlog sounds like a reasonable margin to me.

I generally go by progress. The normal translation team might be a bit behind what's released BUT they've been pretty consistent in dropping a new chapter every month. That doesn't seem like a good reason to pull a snipe.
Now if a group goes silent for six months or more than maybe that's a bit better candidate.

Also just hazarding a guess but school has started up this month so I expect a lot of groups will have some slight delays as everyone gets back into the groove.

I dislike them too BUT if it's the only I can get to read something that's been abandoned by another group for (as an random example) over seven years then it's kind of a "I'll take what I can get" situation.

Some group that hasn't released in month? Nah sit down and let the pro's do their thing.
