@Kayzo Nah this author just do thing differently she is not really a rival that the protagonist will have mix feelings,she already lost and her type of character in his manga are about just accepting the reality that if she is really is in love with him. And with Ayumu going with the plan of win a match before confess that maybe will make senpai confess first.
