I did say that it would make the mammoth focus on him if he went after the eyes. I thought it was obvious it would be in anger.
Also, he's trying to being it down. Looking for weak spots would just be par for the course. But he just keeps throwing the spears at mostly pointless 'meat', instead of anything that would do real damage. Death of a thousand cuts takes a long time, though.
